Free Directions for Making a Shopping Cart Handle Cover

One of the latest things health-conscious mom’s have been making or buying like crazy is shopping cart covers for there children. The fact that fecal material, harmful bacteria from raw meats and produce, and viruses from people's hands that have been sick can be present on shopping cart handles is enough to make anyone take precautions. But it’s not just young children “at risk”, anyone with an immunity deficiency (including the ill, aged, or those with AIDS) need protection as well.

This simple shopping cart handle cover can be made from scrap items in your sewing room in less than 30 minuets. It’s compact enough to fit in your purse, glove box, or even to stick in your pocket. It wraps around all standard shopping cart handles and can be washed in the washing machine as needed.

Materials Required

  • A 22.5x6 inch piece of fabric
  • A 21 inch piece of sew-in Velcro (loop and hook)
  • A 19x2 inch piece of non-skid fabric or shelf lining

Instructions

  1. Hem around entire piece of fabric. Fold ¼ of an inch and then fold the ¼ of an inch under again.
  2. Sew scrap non-skid fabric along the middle of the back of fabric. You can also use standard non-skid shelf lining. It sews on about the same and washes fine. To allow your machine to glide smoothly over the non-skid material sprinkel with baby powder before sewing. I used scrap pieces of non-skid fabric I had on hand instead of a single strip in the photo below.
  3. Sew Velcro to bottom of back of fabric: shown in blue.
  4. Sew remaining piece of Velcro to top of front of fabric.
  5. Tips: You can also add a pocket for keys or sunglasses by cutting an additional piece of fabric 8x16 and hemming all sides. Then you fold one end up toward the other but stop about 1 inch from top; sew sides. Then simply sew the top edge to the middle of the handle on the top side.
